About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Measure and record experimental data relevant to the practical skills required for food and nutrition sciences.
- Analyze experimental data to draw evidence-based conclusions.
- Prepare written scientific reports consistent with industry discipline standards.
- Demonstrate practical skills and laboratory safety for food and nutrition sciences.
- Measuring Basal Metabolic rate
- Measuring the Glycaemic Index of Food
- Microbiology
- Food science in the kitchen
- Food production from small to large quantities
- Biochemistry
- Physiology
In this subject you will undertake a series of interactive, application focused practical exercises that apply theory of biochemistry, physiology and human nutrition within a laboratory environment. This subject is delivered as an on-campus intensive program. Students will be required to attend La Trobe University's Melbourne campus for a 2 week intensive block.

Additional requirements
- Attendance requirements - Students will be required to spend 10 working days at the Bundoora campus at La Trobe University to complete an intensive block of practical laboratory classes. Students are responsible for costs associated with travel and accommodation while completing the intensive.
- Travel requirements - Students will be required to spend 10 working days at the Bundoora campus of La Trobe University to complete an intensive block of practical laboratory classes. Students are responsible for costs associated with travel and accommodation while completing the intensive. Students will also be responsible for purchasing a lab coat and safety glasses for practical class.
- Other requirements - This subject is offered via Open Universities Australia, late enrolments are generally not permitted past the published close of application date for the study period. For students not enrolled in the prerequisite courses, you may be able to undertake these subjects with approval of your home course coordinator, please contact ASK La Trobe for assistance. This is one of the core-choice subjects in 3rd Year and spaces are limited.
Study load
