About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Predict how the immune, cardiovascular, renal and respiratory systems of the human body function both during normal physiological conditions and under pathological stress.
- Analyse and integrate experimentally-obtained physiological data with knowledge of basic physiological principles.
- Effectively and professionally communicate experimental observations and the conclusions drawn from them.

In this subject you gain knowledge in systems physiology, including the heart, blood,immune, renal, respiratory and acid-base systems. We discuss how the heart is a mechanical pump, followed by how blood vessels control blood flow and pressure. Our focus then shifts to the blood and mechanisms involved in developing immunity. You will gain a detailed understanding of the renal system and how it clears the body of waste while also being an important regulator of blood pressure. The respiratory system then becomes our focus where you will gain understanding of breathing mechanisms and how gasses are transported around the body. We conclude focusing on how the body regulates pH using both renal and respiratory buffers.

Past La Trobe University students who have previously completed HBS2PTA Human Physiology Theory A and HBS2PTB Human Physiology Theory B, or PAM2HP2 Human Physiology 2 are ineligible to enrol in this subject.

Single subject enrolments for restricted subjects are not available at OUA, please see https://www.latrobe.edu.au/study/apply/pathways/single-subject-entry for further information. Students who successfully complete two from the four open enrolment subjects (HBS101, DTN101, CHM101, PHE102) may apply under the Academic Eligibility category for admission to the restricted Bachelor of Food and Nutrition. You must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Food and Nutrition to be eligible to enrol in all other non-open access subjects offered in the degree.
