About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the complex interrelationship between biological, cognitive and psychosocial developments in adolescence
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of adolescence as a rapid transitional period for young people and the implications of this when working with young people
- identify how families, peers, schools, commsubjecties and contemporary culture influence adolescent behaviour and development
- identify some social, economic and cultural factors in contemporary Australia and how these create particular stresses for adolescents today
- have an increased capacity to (a) respond to cultural contexts; (b) generate young people's social and cultural capital; and (c) foster positive personal and social identity through learning experiences in the middle years
- develop empathy for young people and an understanding of the challenges facing young people today
- evaluate opinions, make decisions and reflect critically upon evidence and academic arguments about the concept of adolescence
- apply critical reasoning to a diverse range of research pertaining to young people.

This subject is focused on learners in the middle years and explores both historical and current understandings of the biological and social constructions of 'adolescence'. Through these understandings, challenges currently facing young adolescents are investigated and the implications for teaching are considered. Students engage in a constant analytical process to develop their own philosophical understandings of who young people are in the middle years and what are best pedagogical practices to meet these needs.
