About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Interpret contemporary films from a range of eco-cinema perspectives and in relation to their context of production.
- Exercise informed critical judgment when analysing ecological and cultural attributes of contemporary films and communicate competently about them.
- Understand the role of eco-cinema studies in relation to other key theoretical and methodological approaches to film analysis.
- (For students of Italian) Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in all four macro-skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), and use of an appropriate vocabulary, to discuss contemporary Italian cinema effectively in Italian.

This interdisciplinary online course introduces students to transnational eco-cinema studies through an exploration of 21st-century Italian films. Designed for a diverse student cohort, it brings together those with interests in Italian studies, the environmental humanities or screen studies. No prior knowledge of film analysis is required; the course presents the necessary concepts and tools for analysis from an eco-cinema perspective. However, students who do have experience in screen studies will be able to extend their knowledge of the cinematic traditions informing contemporary Italian film-making as well as exploring the new methodological framework of eco-cinema. Students of Italian will further develop their linguistic, cultural and intercultural competence through access to additional resources in Italian and completion of assessment in Italian. For those not studying Italian, all necessary materials are provided in English. PREREQUISITES: For students undertaking assessment in Italian: 2092LHS or equivalent. No prior experience of film analysis is required; the course introduces the necessary concepts and tools for analysis from an eco-cinema perspective.
All students taking the course are assumed to have the general academic skills normally expected on entry to a Level 3 course in the humanities or social science.
All necessary course materials are in English (with films in Italian but subtitled in English).
