About this subject

  • At the completion of this subject students will be able to:

    1. Interpret contemporary films from a range of eco-cinema perspectives and in relation to their context of production.
    2. Exercise informed critical judgment when analysing ecological and cultural attributes of contemporary films and communicate competently about them.
    3. Understand the role of eco-cinema studies in relation to other key theoretical and methodological approaches to film analysis.
    4. (For students of Italian) Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in all four macro-skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), and use of an appropriate vocabulary, to discuss contemporary Italian cinema effectively in Italian.

No prior experience of film analysis is required; the course introduces the necessary concepts and tools for analysis from an eco-cinema perspective.
All students taking the course are assumed to have the general academic skills normally expected on entry to a Level 3 course in the humanities or social science.
All necessary course materials are in English (with films in Italian but subtitled in English).
