About this subject
HSV733 aims to provide students from a variety of disciplines the opportunity to explore the ethical dimensions of practice, in recognition that an interdisciplinary ethics approach best equips future practitioners to make informed decisions with an increased awareness of potentially different value positions. The subject will provide students with foundation knowledge of ethical principles and theories, explore practical ethics within the professions, introduce ethical decision making models and processes and invite critical thinking on key ethical issues that are relevant in the health and human services. The subject aims to develop skills in critical analysis, reflection and ethical decision-making and to equip students to perform ethically within a professional environment.

This subject introduces the concept of interprofessional ethics for the social, health and human services. It covers the foundations of human rights, moral philosophy and ethical theory as these apply to professional practice. Students will explore many of the ethical dilemmas that confront practitioners, including privacy, confidentiality and informed consent; boundary issues and relationships with clients, colleagues and employers; community-based practice, activism and the ethical implications of social media. Students are encouraged to engage in active dialogue with fellow students and others from different professional disciplines to promote a shared understanding of values and ethical perspectives. Students will learn how to use ethical decision-making models, understand issues of regulation, and review relevant codes of ethics and professional practice standards.
