About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- synthesise the relevant epidemiological HIV/STI data from selected countries /commsubjecties to determine HIV/STI disease prevention and treatment priorities
- appraise the political and economic influences associated with the transmission, and responses to transmission, of HIV/STI in selected countries/commsubjecties
- analyse the social, cultural and gender issues associated with transmission dynamics in selected countries/communities
- summarise the best-known explanations for the nature and variation between HIV/STI epidemics throughout the world.
- Histories of STI and HIV
- Biomedical features of STI and HIV
- STI and HIV: global and regional situations and the burden of disease
- Political and economic features of transmission
- The socio-cultural context of transmission - sexuality, gender and religion
- Institutional responses to STI and HIV
- Current Issues for programs and projects in the prevention, control and management of STI and HIV
- Projects and the goals of prevention and care
- STI and HIV in the 21st century
This subject covers historical and contemporary perspectives on STI and HIV. These include social, cultural, religious and gender issues and political and economic influences on transmission, prevention and management of STI/HIV. The future of STI/HIV in the 21st century is examined.
