About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- explain definitions and theoretical concepts of quality and safety in health
- analyse techniques relating to outcome measurements
- assess the extent to which organisation related factors may be contributing to quality and safety approaches
- critically evaluate requirements for a comprehensive approach to management of quality and safety in health care organisations
- recommend ways in which health care organisations can develop a coordinated strategic approach to addressing quality and safety issues.

This subject was previously known as Health Service Quality Development.
The goal of this subject is to introduce the student to strategic approaches for developing a quality oriented health service organisation. Topics include: History and development of quality and safety; Quality and safety issues related to leadership, management, planning and management of information; Role of the consumer; Tools for process analysis and management; Outcomes of quality measurement; External recognition of quality programs; Safety and the quality agenda; Role of clinical governance.
