Professional Studies in Managing Learning Environments
About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- describe the factors that influence the creation and maintenance of supportive and safe learning environments for diverse students and for staff
- appraise different theoretical approaches to classroom management
- create a personal management plan that synthesises and explains a range of ideas for developing and implementing proactive and reactive management strategies in diverse contexts
- develop an outline of policies and practices to manage challenging situations
- demonstrate skills in creating and managing positive learning environments in a classroom setting that support effective teaching and learning.

This subject will focus on participation, engagement, safety and wellbeing of primary school students. Different approaches and strategies for the prevention of and positive response to typical behavioural issues will be appraised. Pre-service teachers will examine policies and practices to manage challenging situations and develop a management plan.
In this subject, skills and knowledge will be applied in a three week professional school placement. Pre-service teachers will have the three-week block placement in the same school as the first placement. The focus for this professional experience is creating and managing a positive learning environment.
Passing this subject is contingent on successful completion of the professional practice component of the subject.
