About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- explain and apply understanding of the theories and practice of writing
- critically reflect on writer identity and compositional processes and how these apply in a learning environment
- create and justify a sequence of lessons for writing in a specific context, using a range of learning, teaching and assessment strategies to support a diversity of learners
- apply knowledge of the graduate teacher standards to establish initial content for a digital professional portfolio, and identify and adopt a reflective practice model to guide its ongoing development
- employ effective communication skills, maintain student safety and meet ethical, legislative, administrative and organisational requirements as you plan, teach and assess diverse groups of learners in primary school settings

This subject was previously known as Primary Professional Experience 1: Planning.
This is the first in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component (a placement in a school). It is also the second in the suite of three English subjects. The subject covers writer identity and theories and practices of writing to provide foundational understandings for teaching. Theories, pedagogical practices and effective planning related to teaching English to support all learners are explored. Specific attention is given to lesson planning which includes selecting objectives, resources and strategies for teaching, learning and assessment. The subject also addresses professional responsibilities, effective communication and reflective practices for learning in diverse contexts. The professional experience practical assessment is a 2-week full-time block placement intended to enable practical application of the knowledge and skills gained, along with providing students with insights into the complexity of the teacher’s role. All required clearances to work with children must be obtained and valid, and all other professional experience requirements met. Both theory and practical components must be passed in order to pass the subject.

Additional requirements
- Placement requirements - The fieldwork for this unit includes a 2-week professional experience placement in a school. Placements are undertaken on a full-time basis in a continuous block at the specified time. Please note that all relevant, valid working with children checks and clearances must be provided as requested prior to commencement of the placement.
- Software requirements - Access to Microsoft Office or a unit approved alternative; Access to video creation and editing software.
- Other requirements - Includes Professional Experience placement.
Study load
- 0.125 EFTSL
- This is in the range of 10 to 12 hours of study each week.
