About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the English curriculum and principles associated with effective teaching in the early years
- interpret and apply theory of children’s literacy development
- select appropriate content, assessment items, teaching strategies and resources in relation to the Australian Curriculum (or local curriculum documents)
- plan, structure and sequence English learning programs.
- Introduction to teaching literacy - theories, oral language and community
- The literacy program - processes and approaches
- Children's literature - multimodal texts, using all modes for learning
- Scaffolding literacy development

This subject will enable pre-service teachers to recognise and translate theory of children’s literacy development. The subject will prepare pre-service teachers to plan, assess and deliver English learning programs for children aged five to eight. A main focus will be on knowledge of curriculum documents and English content areas of language, literacy and literature.
