At the completion of this subject students will be able to:

identify metadata concepts and indexing approaches for use in practice
- extract relevant information and formulate for use in context
- contextualise technological applications and work processes related to knowledge organisation systems and metadata
- design information products using international standards and approaches.

Basic principles involved in structuring information objects and creating the metadata which makes them retrievable. Topics include information structures, hypertext, databases, automatic and derived indexing, metadata and description, document type definitions (DTDs) and schemas, indexing languages, and standards and subject analysis.
