About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- demonstrate the principles and processes involved in research design, data measurement and collection, such as sampling, measurement reliability and validity
- critique research design including experimental, quasi-experimental and observational designs, such as cross-sectional descriptive case studies
- follow the concepts of hypothesis testing and apply appropriate methods (with analytical software, where appropriate) to analyse and interpret health related data.

Introduction to the scientific method, cross-sectional, experimental, quasi-experimental, descriptive case studies. Issues of sampling, bias, sample size calculation. Measurement issues: questionnaire development, reliability and validity of measurement tools and errors. Interpretation of data analysed from appropriate methods. Introduction to non-parametric tests. Ethics in research. Use of statistical software. Elements of critical appraisal.
