Early Literacies and Play-Based Pedagogies
About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- research early literacy contexts and interactions through a self-generated research question and apply research processes to the design of literacy rich environments for children from diverse backgrounds
- create differentiated literacy learning experiences for young children
- examine the relationship between home literacy practices and early literacy learning
- interpret children’s literacy learning by analysing theoretical perspectives and play-based pedagogies.
- Play-based pedagogies, research approaches, and early literacy theories
- Literacy as a social practice: families, cultures, and communities
- Observing, listening, and documenting children engaged in literacy events
- Oral language: communication, music, and storytelling
- Emergent literacy: signs, markings, and writing
- Perspectives and approaches for reading and writing.
- Multiliteracies, multimodal approaches, and digital pedagogies
- Researching and designing literacy rich environments: play based learning and intentional teaching
- Analysing data to assess children's literacy learning
- Honouring diversity and engaging families
- Reflection
This subject examines early literacy theories and perspectives, with an emphasis on play-based pedagogies and research approaches. Pre-service teachers will create literacy-rich settings by developing a research question, designing a literacy project and documenting children’s literacy learning. The experiences and perspectives of families will be sought and the relationship between home literacy practices and early literacy learning will be investigated.
