Design Thinking and Educational Innovation
About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- integrate design thinking principles, practices and contemporary educational theory in the development of educational innovations
- analyse data to identify the need for an educational innovation that accommodates a diverse range of students
- employ learning and teaching data and scholarship of teaching and learning to inform the rationale and design of an educational innovation
- design and develop an educational innovation for an identified need in teaching, learning and /or assessment specific to one’s discipline and context utilising design thinking principles and procedures
- integrate critique into the design and development of an educational innovation.

As approaches to learning and teaching evolve, innovation is now a necessary condition for teaching and the design and delivery of learning. This subject begins with an exploration of issues in contemporary research and theories of learning and teaching. It then critically examines “innovation” in curriculum and learning design, physical and online learning spaces and educational technologies. Learners will develop an innovation by employing design thinking principles and processes to enhance their students’ learning experience and/or outcomes in their own teaching practice. This subject is designed to develop outcomes that are evidence of innovation in one’s teaching. This evidence will be lodged in each learners’ teaching portfolio developed in the Teaching Portfolio final subject of this course. It also is intended to be highly relevant for applications for teaching awards, academic promotion and other forms of professional recognition.
