About this subject

  • On satisfying the requirements of this subject, students will have the knowledge and skills at an intermediate level of Vietnamese to:

    • Use an active vocabulary of around 1,400 items and a passive vocabulary of around 3,000 items.
    • Recognise and use the main structures of standard Vietnamese on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school and at leisure.
    • Communicate appropriately with native speakers in the most commonly occurring situations; produce simple, connected texts on familiar topics and those of personal interest; and describe, experiences, dreams, hopes or viewpoints and future plans. 
    • Demonstrate a cultural understanding and awareness of “taboo” and “need – to do” things in formal communication in Vietnam. 

    In order to achieve these learning outcomes, each week students will be expected to study for five hours as follows: 

    • 60 minutes, before class, studying the written and audio materials for the week 
    • 180 minutes, participating in two 90 minute online sessions
    • 60 minutes, completing weekly exercises 

    Besides, the students are expected to spend at least 5 hours of individual study practising the week’s written and spoken language forms and vocabulary and reviewing feedback on their work.

Completion of VIET1003 Vietnamese 2 or demonstration of equivalent level through completion of a placement test. Students with prior knowledge of the language will be required to take a placement test. Students are not permitted to enrol in a subject that is lower than the level they achieve in the placement test, or a lower level than a subject they have already completed. Students without the appropriate level of proficiency for ANU-VIET2002 (Vietnamese 3) will be withdrawn from this subject and we will recommend an alternative subject at the correct level.
