About this subject

  • Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

    1. Speak and write confidently in Hindi, demonstrating knowledge of regional forms and compound noun formations
    2. Read and discuss common themes in a range of text types, such as magazines, newspapers, and literature, using appropriate sentence structures
    3. Communicate with urban and rural Hindi speakers about personal lives and world views
    4. Demonstrate an ability to read, discuss, and analyse current affairs coverage in India

    Each week students are expected to study for five hours as follows:

    • 30 minutes, before class, studying the written and audio materials for the week
    • 30 minutes, memorising the written and spoken forms of that week’s class content
    • 180 minutes, online students participate in 2 x 90 minute zoom classes
    • 60 minutes, completing weekly exercises

    It is also expected that students should spend at least 5 hours of individual study practicing the week’s written and spoken language forms and vocabulary and reviewing feedback on their work.

Completion of HIND2400 Hindi 4 or demonstration of equivalent level through completion of a placement test. Students with prior knowledge of the language will be required to take a placement test. Students are not permitted to enrol in a subject that is lower than the level they achieve in the placement test, or a lower level than a subject they have already completed. Students without the appropriate level of proficiency for ANU-HIND3500 (Hindi 5) will be withdrawn from this subject and we will recommend an alternative subject at the correct level.
