About this subject
On successful completion of this subject students will be able to:
- outline the historical, cultural, social and religious contexts in which the Christian movement developed up to the end of the sixth century
- use a variety of resources to identify and describe significant aspects of the life of the Christian throughout the period of the later Roman empire
- give a critical account of the key issues involved in the evolution of different 'Christianities'
- assess different factors leading to the emergence of the Christian church's political and cultural dominance by the end of this period.
- Historical, cultural and social background to the emergence of Christianity in the Roman Empire
- Spread of early Christian communities and their impact on, and interaction with, the non-Christian world
- Key elements in the life of the church: the witness of martyrs, the emergence of Trinitarian & Christological doctrine, church structure and ministry
- Theological developments, including the formation of the scriptural canon and the creeds
- The rise of the Christian church to become a major institute in society
This subject introduces students to the Christian world of the first six centuries. It sketches the historical and cultural background that influenced the development of the thought and practice of early Christianity.
A range of assessment procedures will be used to meet the subject learning outcomes and develop graduate attributes consistent with University assessment requirements. Such procedures may include, but are not limited to: essays, reports, examinations, student presentations, case studies, online interactive student performance tasks.
