Studying through OUA

Credit for previous study

Already completed some higher education? Great - you may be able to get credit for your previous study!

Essentially, if you've completed some subjects that are relevant to your course, you may be able to get credit for them for your new course or qualification. This means that you don't need to complete as many units, so you can finish your degree faster.

To request credit, please email to the provider of the course in which you want to enrol.

If you want to undertake a TAFE qualification and think you might be eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL), please contact the relevant course coordinator. RPL assesses skills and competencies you have gained through education, work and life experience, which may then be used as credit towards your qualification.

Getting on-campus credit for my online units

If you're an on-campus student who has completed some units online through OUA, you may be able to credit those online units towards your degree.

Simply ask your on-campus university to approve your request for credit in writing. And remember to request your approval before finalising your enrolment through OUA, as we don't give refunds after Census Date.

If you're an online student who'd like to transfer to an on-campus place, you can apply through your state Tertiary Admissions Centre, or through any other admission arrangement that the university advises.

If you've successfully completed study through OUA, your chances of being offered a place at an on-campus university are much higher than if you hadn't completed any study. We will provide a copy of your OUA Record of Results to the Tertiary Admissions Centre upon their request. You can also download a copy of your Record of Results from My study centre.

Credit transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning for TAFE courses

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and credit transfer allow you to have your previous learning count towards your TAFE qualification.

Credit transfers apply to relevant, successfully completed formal studies, achieved at TAFE, accredited private providers, professional organisations and universities.

RPL allows you to gain credit for skills and knowledge gained outside of formal education, including knowledge gained through work experience, informal and employer-based training, and other non-accredited training.

National recognition means you automatically receive credit at any other registered training organisation in Australia for any TAFE units you complete through OUA.

RPL does not include refunds

Students who enrol in a unit and are subsequently exempted from it because of previous study are ineligible to receive a re-credit of the unit fee. Similarly, students who enrol in an OUA unit without the relevant credit being confirmed in writing by their faculty advisor are also ineligible to receive a re-credit.
