Master of Mental Health Practice
About this degree
In this degree, focused on a rapidly evolving healthcare area, you will acquire specialised knowledge and understanding of how to work effectively with people with a mental illness, their carers and family members. As well as accessing highly relevant courses based on the latest evidence-based research and collaboration with consumers, carers and mental health professionals, you will undertake a 200 hour placement in a mental health service.
You will choose from the following areas of study:
- Practice stream
- Dissertation stream
Students who undertake the dissertation stream will complete a research dissertation on your area of interest in the mental health field. This will provide you with the knowledge and skills for conducting independent research projects, and the research experience necessary for those who wish to pursue a PhD or Masters of Philosophy.
Within a flexible online learning environment, you will study with fellow students from different professional backgrounds who bring a range of valued perspectives. Our recovery-based courses are designed for workers in various settings where mental health knowledge is essential. These include nursing, occupational therapy, psychology and social work, in roles as community support workers, peer support workers, consumer and carer consultants, rehabilitation workers, disability workers, housing officers, police liaison officers and people working in other mental health support roles.
It is anticipated that successful graduates of the Masters in Mental Health Practice will enhance their opportunities for advancement in the mental health area. For some practitioners this program may also be used towards accreditation as a mental health worker. Please check with your registration body for program eligibility.
Award requirements
To be eligible for the award of Master of Mental Health Practice (MMentHPrac), a student must acquire 120 credit points as prescribed below:
- Practice stream:
- gain 100 credit points for prescribed core courses
- gain 20 credit points for listed electives.
- Dissertation stream:
- gain 70 credit points for prescribed core courses
- gain 10 credit points for a listed elective (from List A)
- gain 10 credit points for a listed elective (from List B)
- gain 30 credit points for the dissertation.

Entry requirements
To be eligible for admission to the Master of Mental Health Practice, a student must have completed:
- a Bachelor degree in a health/allied health discipline such as nursing, social work, psychology, occupational therapy, pharmacy, speech pathology, medicine, dentistry, human services with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (using a 7.0 scale)
- OR a bachelor degree with Honours, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma qualification in a human services field;
- OR the Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice (3232) from Griffith University (successful applicants will be eligible for 40 credit points of advanced standing).
Note: Applicants are not permitted to defer an offer. Should you be unable to accept an offer, you must re-apply for entry in the following year.
English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are as follows:
- A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.0
- OR a minimum score of 575 on TOEFL
- OR an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79 (no sub-score less than 19)
- OR no score less than 3+ in each skill of the ISLPR (conducted by ISLPR Language Services only)
- OR a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
- OR a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
- OR an overall score of 58 in the Pearson Test of English (Academic) with no score less than 50.
English test results must be no more than two years old.
The Direct Entry Program (DEP) pathway is not accepted for this program.
Students who complete Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice (3232) may be eligible for 40 credit points of advanced standing towards the Master of Mental Health Practice. No further credit will be granted and students must complete the remaining 80 credit points at Griffith University to be eligible for the award of Master of Mental Health Practice.
