Graduates will be able to apply in-depth knowledge of:
- contemporary issues, priorities and contexts in higher education and their implications;
- scholarly practice in higher education;
- curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, policies and practices designed to improve learning outcomes in higher education;
- methods for fostering interdisciplinary and intercultural partnerships and working collaboratively;
- research principles and methods and their application to higher education.
This degree does not lead to teacher registration in Australia.
Graduates are suitable for careers in a variety of positions within higher education and as advisers to government departments and other policy makers.
Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification and must normally be employed in a teaching position in a higher education institution.
Credit transfer may be granted, on application, for prior study completed in a relevant honours, graduate certificate, graduate diploma or master degree; accredited professional development; or relevant work experience.
Applications for credit transfer are assessed on a case by case basis according to Flinders University policies. Students must be made an offer for entry into a degree before lodging their completed credit transfer application, along with all necessary documentation for formal assessment. This degree is intended for academics working in the tertiary sector or who aspire to teach at tertiary level, and those whose personal, professional or research interests include a focus on higher education.
It is designed to critically examine recent literature, engage in debate and reflection, and develop and apply in-depth knowledge to transform practice knowledge into an education for practice.
It is 2 years in length on a full-time basis and can also be undertaken part-time.
Recommended Study Pattern
Students are required to undertake study in six compulsory subjects and the remaining subjects to complete the basic entry level for the course are chosen from an extensive range in elective subjects.
As a guide, full-time students generally undertake four subjects per semester and part-time students undertake two subjects per semester.
To complete the requirements of the Master of Education (Higher Education) (Basic level entry), students must successfully complete six core (compulsory) subjects and 10 elective subjects chosen from an extensive range of electives.
