About this degree
This degree delivers advanced professional learning for teachers and those with a professional involvement in education, including school bursars, school development officers and training personnel. It will help you develop greater expertise in educational practice or research and can contribute to current teachers' professional development requirements.
You can choose to specialise in one of three majors:
- Leadership, Policy and Social Transformation (Mt Gravatt and online)
- Young Children, Early Childhood and Identity (Mt Gravatt and online)
- Youth, Digital Culture and New Learning (Mt Gravatt and online)
If a major is not offered at the campus of your enrolment and you do not want to or cannot study online, you may travel between campuses to undertake your studies.
There is also a General Studies pathway available that will allow you the flexibility to create a personalised program according to your interests.
As a graduate, you will be able to apply knowledge and skills in a range of contexts for professional practice or scholarship. Please note that this degree is not an initial teacher education program and will not lead to registration as a teacher in Queensland schools.
Award requirements
To be eligible for the award of Master of Education (MEd), a student must acquire 120 credit points as prescribed below:
- Standard pathway:
- 60 credit points for core courses;
- 40 credit points for a major;
- 20 credit points for listed electives and/or approved electives.
- General Studies pathway:
- 40 credit points for core courses;
- 80 credit points for listed electives and/or approved electives.
To be eligible for the award of Master of Education (MEd), a student admitted with 40 credit points of advanced standing must acquire 80 credit points as prescribed below:
- Standard pathway:
- 40 credit points for core courses;
- 40 credit points for a major.
- General Studies pathway:
- 40 credit points for core courses;
- 40 credit points for listed electives and/or approved electives.
This degree/s may be awarded with Distinction where a student achieves a minimum program GPA of 6.5 with no failed courses. The words 'This award was achieved with Distinction' will be recorded on the testamur and will appear below the conferral date of the award.

Entry requirements
To be eligible for admission to the Master of Education, applicants will require the following:
- hold a Bachelor of Education degree or an equivalent teacher education qualification
- OR hold a Bachelor degree in any discipline from a recognised University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing) and have a minimum of three years equivalent full-time experience in a leadership or management position in an educational setting
- OR hold a Bachelor Honours degree in Education (students will be eligible for 40 credit points of advanced standing)
- OR hold a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma of Education or equivalent (students will be eligible for 40 credit points of advanced standing).
Note: The Program Director will consider the applicant's prior qualification and current involvement in educational settings to determine eligibility for entry.
English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are as follows:
- A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.0
- OR a minimum score of 575 on TOEFL
- OR an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79 (no sub-score less than 19)
- OR no score less than 3+ in each skill of the ISLPR (conducted by ISLPR Language Services only)
- OR a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
- OR a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
- OR an overall score of 58 in the Pearson Test of English (Academic) with no score less than 50.
English test results must be no more than two years old.
Students who successfully complete the Direct Entry Program (DEP) will satisfy the English Language requirements for this Griffith degree.
