Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Certificate: EAP 5 Advanced: 70%; OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 550 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 79, with no individual band below 18; OR, equivalent levels of English language proficiency using other English language tests or measures as approved by the Senior DVC & Provost.

The Graduate Diploma of Business Management addresses the needs of graduates from a range of disciplines who are seeking to increase their professional value through acquiring both an understanding of global, national and local pressures on business and a capability to respond professionally and effectively to those pressures. It provides students with concepts, frameworks, analytical, problem solving and research skills to enable them to operate confidently and effectively in a global environment characterised by constant change and requiring flexible and innovative responses at a professional level.
Students apply degree content to develop dynamic and strategic responses to complex internal and external challenges facing organisations from the perspective of strategic decision making, strategic finance, contemporary marketing challenges and managing complex alliances across the public and private sector. Graduates can expect to improve prospects of employment, enhance current job performance, aid promotion towards middle or senior management and increase their ability to meet new opportunities.
The degree will enhance student’s capabilities for working within technical, operational or line management roles while increasing their value contribution to an organisation.

At completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to apply a range of management disciplines in a cross-disciplinary approach to holistic and problem-oriented business issues paying particular attention to mitigating risk
  2. Demonstrate the ability to identify critique and synthesise complex information and apply it to problem-solving and decision-making exercises as an individual and as a team member
  3. Develop an appreciation of business and stakeholder management challenges and skills associated with the current complex business environment from a commercial, environmental, and people and culture sustainability perspective
  4. Understand and reflect on the impact of self (from the perspective of personality and learning style) on teamwork processes and outcomes and their role as a leader in/of a team
  5. Develop the critical and research skills necessary to prepare students for successful further postgraduate study and the transfer of learning to the workplaces.

Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this degree may be granted ‘credit’ and/or entry to the degree with ‘advanced standing’. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.

Please note: The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Graduate Certificate in Business Management is 50 credit points (normally four subjects).

No further admissions are permitted into any of the levels within the suite.

If you are continuing in the Master of Business Management or the nested Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma it is imperative that you take in to consideration the last offerings of any units that are in teach out. Please also note unit replacements listed in the teach out plan.

Award Requirements

To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma of Business Management, students must complete eight subjects (100 credit points) comprising of:

  • Five (5) core subjects of study (62.5 credit points)
  • Three (3) elective subjects of study (37.5 credit points)

Please note: You cannot re-enrol into Swinburne subjects that you have already passed.
