About this degree
During this course students will:
- Be well grounded in knowledge of foundational Islamic disciplines and apply this knowledge and research evidence in diverse contexts.
- Reflect and apply the principles of various Islamic disciplines in order to understand how Islam and its study facilitates open enquiry, ethical practice, social justice, cultural and religious diversity, reconciliation and environmental sustainability.
- Demonstrate cognitive and creative skills to exercise critical thinking and judgement in identifying and solving problems with intellectual independence.
- Apply learned knowledge and skills to the process of decision making of existing and emerging issues related to Islamic practice in the modern world.
- Demonstrate analytical skills, including the exercise of critical and reflective reasoning and judgement.
- Demonstrate communication skills in varying contexts to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas related to Islamic Studies.
- Be able to work effectively individually and as part of teams, with their peers and superiors in knowledge and critically reflect on their own learning and practice.

The only degree of its kind currently offered in Australia, the Bachelor of Islamic Studies from Charles Sturt University provides well-rounded knowledge in the disciplines of Islam. This degree will benefit anyone seeking an understanding or appreciation of the Islamic faith for either career development or personal interest.
Comprehensive program
The Bachelor of Islamic Studies provides advanced knowledge of Islam, including theological, jurisprudential, historical, contemporary and spiritual aspects. Islamic sciences are studied from both a classical and contemporary perspective. You'll graduate with grounded knowledge in the various Islamic disciplines as well as a level of proficiency in Arabic.
Study in the digital age
You can pursue your Islamic studies degree online, full-time or part-time, to fit your study in with work, family or other commitments. You can also fast-track your degree by taking four subjects per session, including subjects in Session 3 (November to February), to finish in two years, instead of three.

The Centre for Islamic Studies and Civilisation is a collaboration between Charles Sturt University and the Islamic Sciences and Research Academy of Australia (ISRA). Charles Sturt University's courses have been designed in association with ISRA's advisory committee, which includes some of the most respected scholars from the Australian Muslim community.
Recommended study pattern
There is a degree of flexibility in the course structure, suitable for the large number of part time enrolments. Students are encouraged to complete the core subjects first as they serve as a foundation to the discipline. Students will structure their progress through the degree according to the requirements in the degree and to availability of subjects in a given session. A good number of core subjects and electives will be made available per session to ensure student have a good range of subjects to choose from.

The elective set allows students to develop a breath of knowledge through enrolling in any subject(s) within the University for which they meet the prerequisites / enrolment restrictions.

- Restricted electives: Select up to four (4) subjects from the Arabic or Islamic Studies electives
- Unrestricted electives: Select up to four (4) subjects from another another discipline with the approval of the Course Director.

Entry requirements
Successful completion of two university-level subjects (AQF level Associate Degree or higher) demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies
- Minimum ATAR of 60 (including adjustment factors), OR
- Successful completion of a Tertiary Preparation Course from an Australian University or an accredited provider demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies, OR
- Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) with an equivalent ranking to the currently listed ATAR.
- A completed AQF Certificate III or higher level qualification, OR
- 50% completion of an AQF Diploma level qualification.
Work experience, within the same industry as the course profile, of no less than two years.
Minimum English Language Proficiency requirements apply.
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) and credit for current competencies will be granted to eligible applicants.
