The Undergraduate Certificate in Teaching Education Studies is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in early childhood or primary education and gives the student entry (and credit for the four subjects completed) into the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) or (Primary) degree at Curtin. You will explore the world of child development, the use of technology in the classroom for younger school-aged learners, and explore emerging literacy. This course will also examine some of the issues and trends that impact on teaching and schooling.

Undergraduate Certificate in Teaching Education Studies

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) has been designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Specifically, this degree provides a qualification for those intending to teach children at the primary level of education.Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of children. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional experience in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of a block one full school term.Subject content includes digital literacy, planning lessons, assessment, classroom management and understanding diverse student needs.Please note that this course is only available to applicants who are residing in Australia for the duration of their degree. As this course doesn’t hold CRICOS registration international students on a Student VISA are not permitted to undertake this course.

Bachelor of Education (Primary Education)

The Bachelor of Education qualifies you to be a teacher in Australia, and many countries overseas. Our evidence-based course draws on the Faculty of Education’s leadership and research in teacher education that is responsive to local and global contexts. Graduates will be qualified as a teacher in one of the following five areas:<ul><li>Early Childhood/Primary (6 weeks to Year 6);</li><li>Primary (Kindergarten/Prep to Year 6); English Primary Specialisation and specialisation in Science and Maths available; </li><li>Primary/Secondary (English Primary Specialisation and one Secondary specialisation);</li><li>Secondary (Two teaching specialisations); OR</li><li>Secondary: Design and Technology (choose from Industrial Technology, or Food and Fibre, plus one Secondary specialisation).</li></ul>The first year of the course provides a distinctive foundation with excellent grounding in literacy, numeracy, and subject content, as well as issues in contemporary education. Within the four-year full-time equivalent degree (or 3.5 years fast tracked*), you also undertake core learning in Indigenous education, sustainability, inclusive (special) education, along with curriculum and pedagogy learning across disciplines.All primary and secondary students across Australia need to successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) prior to undertaking the second professional experience placement.If undertaking full-time study from year 2, studying from January to December (6 teaching terms) may be required in some years.Please note admission to this course includes non-academic requirements.*Depending on course and specialisation pathway and term commencement.

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood/Primary)

This subject introduces you to pedagogies appropriate for supporting the learning of mathematics in classrooms. The subject will provide opportunities for you to develop your personal numeracy skills and to identify where these skills can be applied in the context of education support. You will develop an understanding of appropriate pedagogies for individualising numeracy development, along with the theoretical underpinnings of how children learn mathematics. The subject will provide opportunities for you to deepen your own mathematical content knowledge, along with assessing children’s mathematical thinking using work samples and practical classroom examples.

Foundations of Numeracy Support

This subject introduces you to pedagogies appropriate for supporting the learning of literacy in classrooms. opportunities are provided for you to develop your personal literacy skills and identify where these skills can be applied in the context of education support. Through this subject you will develop an understanding of appropriate pedagogies for individualising literacy development, along with the theoretical underpinnings of how children learn in and through literacy. This subject was previously known as Understanding Regions.With a focus on Western Australia, Systems Thinking for Regional Impact allows you to develop a systems thinking approach, and learn deep mapping techniques, to understand the pivotal role of regions when addressing the world’s most complex environmental, societal, and governance (ESG) sustainability challenges.On completion of the subject, you will be equipped with knowledge and skills to understand complex challenges and how to build partnerships with regional, rural, and remote communities and industries to co-create regenerative strategies and solutions.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject, you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’.
