Engineering Modelling is the capstone unit in the engineering mathematics part of the Associate degree in Engineering. The unit builds on knowledge already gained, and further develops problem-solving skills. There are three parts or 'modules' that make up the unit: mathematics with MATLAB, statistics and two MATLAB group projects. The two projects form a major part of the unit: they require use of mathematics, MATLAB, teamwork and writing skills to solve realistic engineering problems.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

1. use the techniques of differential calculus of functions of two or more variables
2. use the techniques of integral calculus of functions of two or more variables
3. use the techniques of parameterised curves in two and three dimensional space
4. use the techniques associated with statistical inference for means and proportions applied to engineering situations
5. use the technique of least squares regression to analyse relationships between two quantitative variables for engineering applications
6. develop in a team, a MATLAB program using functions of two variables to model a practical problem in mechanical engineering
7. develop in a team, a MATLAB program using functions of two variables to model a practical problem in civil engineering, more independently than in the previous outcome.
