This unit covers ruminant and monogastric animals and is designed for both 'generalist' and 'animal science' oriented students. The major constraints to increased animal production posed by environment (nutrition, climate, health and welfare) are considered in an integrated way, ie emphasis is placed on the interactions between factors such as nutrition, climate and disease and includes contemporary social imperatives such as waste management. A purpose-written book is provided. The unit provides sufficient basic scientific information about the major factors that limit animal production to enable students to analyse and advise on animal production problems in widely different practical situations.

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate advanced knowledge of the environmental constraints to livestock production and advanced understanding of the interactions between these constraints;
  2. apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate depth in understanding of scientific principles underpinning practise in the field of animal production;
  3. review, analyse critically, evaluate and consolidate knowledge to advise on animal production problems in widely different practical situations;
  4. exercise critical thinking and judgement in planning and presenting a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas; and
  5. critically review content and practices of the practical workshops and explain their application to animal production.
  • Case Study (15%)
  • Invigilated Exam (55%)
  • Mid-study period test (15%)
  • Report (15%)

This unit addresses the following topics.

Each unit offered through OUA provides students with unit information that includes assessment topics and due dates, policy information and contact numbers for university support and academic staff. Study materials will also clearly outline each week's topic, readings, student activities and the format of all assessment.

This unit is not currently a requirement for any courses, but may be eligible for credit.

  1. Many undergraduate courses on offer through OUA include 'open elective' where any OUA unit can be credited to the course. You need to check the Award Requirements on the course page for the number of allowed open electives and any level limitations.
  2. In other cases, the content of this unit might be relevant to a course on offer through OUA or elsewhere. In order to receive credit for this unit in the course you will need to supply the provider institution with a copy of the Unit Profile in the approved format, which you can download here. Note that the Unit Profile is set at the start of the year, and if textbooks change this may not match the Co-Op textbook list.

Textbooks are subject to change within the academic year. Students are advised to purchase their books no earlier than one to two months before the start of a unit.
