The Graduate Diploma in Energy & Environment has been designed to provide postgraduate training for Australian and international professionals working (or wishing to work) in the field of environmental management within the energy industry.

The course aims to provide students with an understanding of the policy context of energy systems, the associated environmental impacts and their assessment and subsequent monitoring. Particular focus is paid to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and global warming issues, currently demanding much attention at all levels of society.


Students will gain knowledge about holistic approaches to sustainable energy development and how to improve existing energy systems. They will develop knowledge of climate change science, energy and carbon policy, the management and reporting of energy and carbon emissions, the environmental impacts associated with energy systems, and their assessment and subsequent monitoring. In addition students have the opportunity to undertake a short research project to explore an area of energy that they are really passionate about. Students are required to complete a total of 24 points over a period of 1 year full-time equivalent, which is available in internal, external or mixed-mode of study.


Graduates of a Graduate Diploma will have:

  1. skills to report on energy consumption and carbon emissions, critique and improve energy policy, and conduct research into innovative energy solutions,
  2. skills in spatial data analysis using graphical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing for the purposes of environmental management and planning,
  3. skills in developing policy instruments, environmental decision-making and public engagement with relation to environmental assessment and management,
  4. skills in collecting, analyzing, interpreting and reporting data from environmental monitoring programs,
  5. cognitive skills to review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge and identify and provide solutions to problems,
  6. cognitive skills to think critically and to generate and evaluate complex ideas
  7. specialised technical and creative skills in a field of skilled and/or professional practice,
  8. communication skills to demonstrate an understanding of theoretical concepts, and
  9. communication skills to transfer complex knowledge and ideas to a variety of audiences.

The course is designed in a way that the postgraduate students, irrespective of their previous degrees, can learn aspects of management, sustainability, policy and climate science in relation to environmental aspects of energy project development. The course also teaches students research skills that allow them to investigate a particular area of interest in the field of energy, develop a research plan and write a scientific report.


With training in state of the art research and teaching facilities, you will gain practical experience and learn from experts from the Murdoch University Energy Research and Innovation Group (MUERI) as well as environmental impact experts from Environmental Science at Murdoch University. Graduates will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills:

  1. to make high level, independent judgments in a range of technical or management functions in varied specialised energy and environment contexts,
  2. to initiate, plan, implement and evaluate specialised technical and/or creative contexts, and
  3. with responsibility and accountability for personal outputs and all aspects of the work or function of others within broad parameters.

Students apply techniques learned from the course in environmental assessment and management at all scales of application from the local to regional, national and international level, and across a range of applications including protected area management, industry, government planning agencies and environmental impact assessment. Classroom students have site visits to wind farms, solar farms, village power renewable energy demonstrations, and conduct a walk-through investigation of energy consumption in a large hospital. Lectures are provided by MUERI renewable energy experts, Environmental Science experts as well as from guests from the energy and environmental science industries. Online students are provided all materials from the lectures, tutorials and site visits and are encouraged to participate in live classroom discussions and to present their work using online software.
The assignments are designed in a way that the students test and improve their understanding in scientific, mathematical, operational, engineering and computing skills, and critical analysis and reporting.
Students also learn how to conduct literature reviews that they present, either in person or online, to gain confidence on gathering information, improve their reporting and presentation skills, and to update their knowledge on current research and modern practices in renewable energy. 
Some students have been successful in obtaining vacation employment during their studies which helps them to select a career in the energy or environmental industries. This course will also provide students with a clear pathway to the Master of Renewable Energy at Murdoch

There is increasing interest within government and industry to develop approaches that will reduce GHG emissions. It is expected that there will be high demand for personnel with expertise in GHG science and policy following the Australian government's introduction of the Emission Trading Scheme.

Key potential employers include: government agencies, large companies that will acquire GHG obligations, companies entering or expanding their operations in the carbon trading arena, organisations active in the GHG policy debate and industry organisations seeking to advise members of obligations and potential opportunities.


An undergraduate degree or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution.
Some of the units have a prerequisite for Upper High School or introductory university level Physics. Therefore, students without that background may need to do the prerequisite unit SCI16 Introduction to Physics in addition to the eight units in this degree. English Language Proficiency Requirements

International Applicants, and Australian applicants whose first language is not English, must demonstrate competency in the English language. The minimum English language requirements are: International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): with a minimum overall score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0).

Students with adequate academic backgrounds should seek exemptions from the Chair of Energy Studies at Murdoch University. Applicants with relevant prior learning may be granted credit if they comply with the university’s policy on accreditation. Students should contact Murdoch University for further advice.

Eligible OUA students can access the government loan scheme known as FEE-HELP. You pay back the loan through your taxes once your income reaches a minimum threshold.

Who can access it?

  • Australian citizens who will undertake, in Australia, at least one unit of study contributing to their course
  • Permanent humanitarian visa holders who will be resident in Australia for the duration of their unit
  • Permanent visa holders who are undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals, and will be resident in Australia for the duration of their study

2015 Course Changes 

Murdoch’s commitment to you:

The significant changes are:

  • There have been no more 4 point postgraduate units offered since 2015.
  • All students need to graduate with 24 points of credit, but may be able to graduate with 23 points of credit if signed off by the Academic Chair for the programs – to ensure that students are not disadvantaged by the changes.
