This unit introduces two related areas of legal practice, environment and planning law. The unit addresses state, federal and international law relating to the environment and natural resources with a focus on regulation. The unit next addresses planning issues considering state and local authority regulation in relation to planning. The unit deals with relevant legislation and case law in the developing areas of environment and planning law and considers issues of environmental justice that arise in legal practice in these areas.

Upon successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of local and international obligations relating to the environment and natural resources and identify legal issues that arise in relation to this area
  2. apply the law relating to land use and development
  3. apply the law relating to preparation, administration and enforcement of planning instruments
  4. demonstrate an understanding of issues of environmental justice that arise in legal practice in these areas
  5. critically examine law reform options in these two related areas of law
  6. demonstrate an understanding of the role of planning law in designing urban environments.
