This unit will build upon the students understanding of risk and clinical assessment learnt in CCJ714 Risk Assessment and Management in FMH. Theoretical and empirical approaches to assessment are considered in this unit. Assessment of specific clinical presentations and risk of problem behaviours are examined separately utilising tools currently in common use in the FMH field.  Students will be able to gain a practical knowledge of specific tools and apply them to a range of treatment and management plans specific to the FMH population.

After successfully completing this unit you should be able to:

1  An overview of the considerations which shape risk assessment and management practices in forensic mental health;
2  An understanding of the aims and utility of risk assessment and management;
3  A knowledge of the main risk assessment approaches and an understanding of their application in forensic mental health of the most effective approaches;
4  A knowledge of risk management strategies and applications in forensic mental health;
5  Skills in evaluating which assessment tools and methods are appropriate for different situations;
6  Skills in implementing risk management strategies using assessment information to inform decision making.
