The unit Information Systems Fundamentals offers an overview of the entire IS discipline, while giving students a solid foundation for further study in advanced IS units such as the internet, systems analysis and design, programming, project management, database management, data communications, eCommerce application, decision support, business intelligence and knowledge management.

This unit also addresses organisational use of technology and in particular the ‘fit’ between technology, information systems, culture and social change in a global context. It is relevant not only for IS majors, but to students from fields of study, such as management, business and social science.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Describe the concepts of organisational structure and culture
  2. Identify the framework and boundaries of Information Systems in the global environment
  3. Apply appropriate systems analysis and design methods, tools and techniques in solving business problems
  4. Recognise the role and practical application of IS/IT in business systems
  5. Examine the impact of social and ethical standards in global business operations
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of sustainability practices and Green IT in information system context
