In this subject, students will develop an understanding of nutrition requirements and physiological changes across the lifespan: pre-conception, pregnancy & foetal development, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and ageing as well as special situations including nutrition for sport. Students will also learn about food and nutrition dietary patterns across the different life stages. Students will be able to combine prior nutritional and biosciences knowledge and skills with the new material to gain a more in-depth understanding of human nutritional needs, requirements and habits

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. analyse and compare & contrast the physiological differences/changes occurring during different stages of the life span.
  2. analyse and compare & contrast the nutritional requirements of pregnant & lactating women, infants, children, adolescents, adults & older persons.
  3. analyse and compare & contrast the nutritional issues and habits of particular relevance and particular risk behaviours of each age group.
  4. synthesize knowledge of physiology, nutritional requirements & issues and behaviours across the lifespan and apply this knowledge to individuals.
  • Assessment — 500 word formative assessment (10%)
