This unit will expose students to the issues related to the design, development, implementation, assessment and evaluation of online learning environments. It is intended as an introductory unit leading towards greater understanding of the complexities of integration of pedagogy with information and communication tools when designing an effective learning environment underpinned by current learning theory. Learners in this unit are connected in the exploration, investigation, formulation and resolution of issues identified in institutional, technological, pedagogical, and ethical contexts. Learners engage rigorously with current learning theories suitable for web-based environment in order to make links between the theory and practice.

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge through the investigation of trends in the use of technology in learning contexts to inform the understanding of eLearning environments;
  2. critically evaluate information relevant to a range of eLearning environments;
  3. critically analyse and discuss the use of emerging tools in the context of technology development, educational paradigms, usage by various social groups, innovation and adoption by social groups;
  4. demonstrate an integrated understanding of a range of ICT applications to inform own learning in collaborative online environments and evaluate their relevance and use in eLearning environments;
  5. use expert judgement to measure effectiveness of an eLearning environment, communicating this effectively to others; and
  6. use a high level of autonomy and judgement to apply a range of technologies to the design of eLearning environments relevant to own social environment/context and professional work.
