This unit will focus on the cycle of planning, teaching, assessment, reflection and reporting, including assessment of, for, and as learning. Assessment techniques will be examined, and assessment tasks will be designed for specific curriculum areas. A three week professional practice placement will enable practical application of the knowledge and skills gained as students design, implement and reflect upon formative and summative assessment tasks. The overall pass requirement for the unit consists of a mark of at least 50% for the theory component and a pass grade for the professional practice placement.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. research and explain theories and models of effective assessment principles and practices
  2. create assessment items suited to a diverse range of students, to determine student achievement
  3. analyse students’ assessment task responses, provide constructive, informative feedback to improve student learning, and interpret student data
  4. use effective communication and classroom management skills when assessing student learning
  5. collaborate with school personnel to make consistent and comparable judgements of student learning.
