Although the Asia Pacific Region should be foremost in the minds of Australian tourism planners and marketers, many of the issues and challenges facing the region are replicated in other parts of the globe. Moreover there are significant issues that subsume national or regional boundaries, the impacts of which can be felt on a universal scale.
Through the lens of the Asia Pacific region the unit examines a wide range of challenges from the seemingly intractable threats of terrorism to the entrenched problems of third world poverty and child exploitation, to more practical considerations such as the future of energy sources.
The unit serves as preparation for the unit ‘Global Tourism Futures’ which adopts the focus of foresight and considers the impact of current issues to the future of the industry. Here the emphasis is on current issues and potential solutions.

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate a capacity to interpret and contextualise the social, cultural, economic and environmental issues facing the tourism industry
  2. conduct focused research and communicate the findings to peers and a broader audience
  3. appreciate and explain the need for cultural sensitivity and ethical practice in tourism development
  4. display independence of thought and the ability to reflect on a range of opinions and ideologies
  5. explain the causal link between tourism activity and undesirable social phenomena
  6. outline strategic approaches to the management of local and global crises including an impending energy crisis
  7. describe the responsibilities vested in tourism’s expansive use of resources
  8. 8. Explain the social and economic forces driving the evolving tourism product
  9. identify countries where the transition to democracy is the catalyst for tourism activity
