In this unit you will investigate how service design uses human-centred methods and approaches to improve productivity and quality of services. Communication designers are well positioned to plan and take an effective role in collaborating with other disciplines for service design.

You will investigate service design principles through a research-led process that uses human-centred design methodology. It will include a variety of methods, tools and ‘scaffolds’ to investigate real-world problems.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Articulate and apply extensive knowledge of how design supports strategic activities in a range of fields, including corporate, social and public sectors.
  • Apply a range of design research principles such as thinking in critical, systematic and holistic ways to dissect complex systems and issues.
  • Generate knowledge through exploration and communicate this knowledge through visual language.
  • Create and evaluate service design solutions to real world problems, in terms of existing and emerging disciplinary and interdisciplinary professional practice.
  • Assignment 1 — Individual presentation (30%)
  • Assignment 2 — Group project (30%)
  • Assignment 3 — Reflection on learning (15%)
