This unit teaches the basic tools in statistics and computing. It examines areas such as business statistics, statistical inference, hypothesis testing with reference to business problems, construction of index numbers, correlation and forecasting based on regression analysis. It also provides hands-on experience in data analysis using Microsoft Excel 2010. Assessment is based on graded online quizzes, a project using Microsoft Excel and a final examination.

This unit requires 10 hours per week time allocation for students to complete all required activities -  reading the topic notes and the relevant chapters from the textbook; viewing the lecture recordings, completing homework problems, practising online quizzes and practising data analysis on Microsoft Excel.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. organise, summarise and present data in relevant useful forms
  2. make use of data and range of methods that are useful in making inferences, about business problems
  3. recognise situations where statistical analysis would be of benefit
  4. use the statistical tools in the excel spreadsheet package to perform basic statistical data analysis.
