This unit provides students with an understanding of the cultural and national factors that affect people management issues in organisations that operate across national borders. It also examines the efficacy of different employment policies and practices within the world economy. The unit explains the reasons for the development of different forms of employment practices and the extent to which these differences are sustainable.

At the completion of this course, students should have:

  1. An advanced understanding of international and comparative human resource management and employment relations (IHRM and IER) as a functional area, adding to their career and vocational skills, and professional effectiveness.
  2. Critically evaluate scholarly perspectives on IHRM and IER and apply these to the analysis of the changing nature of work organisations and social regulation in the global economy.
  3. An understanding of the principal roles, functions and outcomes of IHRM and IER;
  4. The knowledge to problem-solve and critically evaluate IHRM and IER complexities, contributing to their organisational membership skills; and
  5. The knowledge to apply effective IHRM and IER values and techniques to real-world situations, and in particular, to apply these values to the practice of multi-cultural teamwork.
