This advanced unit covers the management principles and the auditing requirements of an effective Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental (OHSE) management system, with emphasis on the systems specified in AS/NZS ISO 19011 Guidelines for Quality and/or Environmental Management Systems Auditing. The unit pays particular attention to audit concepts and frameworks, the audit process, collecting evidence, audit skills, audit reporting and leading audit teams.

On completion of this unit you should be able to:

  1. Analyse and assess the impacts of adverse effects on health and environmentwithin organisations
  2. Estimate OHSE risks to health or environment in organisations, including acceptable levels of risk
  3. Relate the principles of risk management to auditing concepts and practices, including the steps involved in the creation and implementation of an audit tool
  4. Apply OHSE concepts, procedures and terminology in relevant contexts to measure OHSE management systems performance
  5. Demonstrate a capacity to communicate effectively with OHSE professionals and stakeholders about OHSE risks and management systems performance
  6. Evaluate the relevance of the major audit and risk standards to the assessment of specific environmental management systems
  7. Critically evaluate the roles, understanding and preparedness of all key participants in a workplace audit, in particular the audit team leader and senior organisational stakeholders.
