This unit introduces the key concepts of sports medicine for coaches. It includes references to resources and information to assist coaches in their role in providing safe and effective practices to the athletes under their care.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate accepted safety and privacy practices
  2. describe basic principles of injury management
  3. manage soft tissue injuries
  4. recognise and manage common sports illnesses and injuries
  5. manage athletes with known medical conditions
  6. demonstrate appropriate strategies for managing special populations
  7. design responses for case studies in sports medicine
  8. understand the specific roles and functioning of a sports medicine team
  9. demonstrate appropriate warm-up and stretching procedures
  10. develop relevant neuromuscular training for injury prevention and performance enhancement
