This unit provides an overview of the publishing industry, its role, personnel, strategies and products. The unit contextualises the history of the industry and its evolution as both a business and commercial enterprise. We will examine the often complex operations of this cultural industry from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Students will develop an understanding of: the history of the industry; contemporary issues facing publishing as a cultural industry; the professional expertise required to develop a text for publication; production and marketing processes; developments in electronic and non-traditional publishing.

At the completion of this unit you will have a solid knowledge of the role of publishing as a cultural industry, its professional practices and production procedures. 

You will develop understanding and expertise in the following key areas:

  1. Historical evolution of the industry
  2. Ambiguities of publishing as both a cultural and commercial enterprise
  3. Role of the publisher and editor
  4. Copyright and publishing agreements
  5. Publishing supply chain including editorial, production and marketing processes
  6. Electronic and non-traditional publishing.
