This unit will provide a critical review of the theory and practice of training methodologies. Students will develop individualised training programs demonstrating an understanding and application of the concepts of periodisation, training age, growth and development factors and recovery. The importance of a balanced approach to sport and life will be emphasised in the planning process.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of important physiological principles as they apply to training an elite athlete
  2. describe the body composition and biomotor abilities of elite performers in their sport (and/or positions within a team) and special nutritional needs
  3. locate and critically evaluate recommended performance evaluation practices for their sport
  4. conduct, review and understand performance analysis tests for athletes in their sport that assesses strength, power, energy system capacity and lactate test data
  5. review previous training programs and evaluate whether they are physiologically sound according to the specific needs of an athlete
  6. design a comprehensive annual training program for an athlete in their sport.
