This course covers the foundations of moral philosophy and ethical theory as they apply to professional practice in the Human Services context. Content includes standards of practice, ethical codes and ethical decision making in an interdisciplinary context.

HSV7033 Interdisciplinary Professional Ethics has been designed to provide students with foundation knowledge about ethical responsibilities in the interprofessional context, expand understanding of different theoretical and practice perspectives on ethical issues, and encourage engagement with a process of ethical dialogue. The importance of exploration of personal and professional values, understanding of ethical decision-making processes, and integration of critical reflection are core learning objectives.

Upon successful completion of this unit you should be able to:

  1. Identify the foundations of ethical thought, moral philosophy and ethical theory, and the pivotal ethical discussions, arguments, rationales and positions associated with these.
  2. Understand the relevance of human-rights based practice frameworks within health and human services, and the importance of exploring personal value positions that can influence practice.
  3. Recognise the unique contribution of a range of professional disciplines in the resolution of ethical issues, problems and dilemmas in multidisciplinary work contexts, and identify the codes of ethics governing different professions.
  4. Identify the founding principles and purposes inherent in the codes of ethics of particular professional disciplines, and analyse and critique these codes in relation to their contribution and applicability to professional conduct and practice situations.
  5. Develop the skills and processes to make informed and appropriate assessments in relation to ethical challenges, using ethical decision-making models, and to take justifiable action based on those assessments.
  6. Demonstrate self-evaluative and critical reflective practice skills necessary to work within a broad ethical framework in an interdisciplinary environment.
  7. Conceptualise and critique current practice issues in particular fields of practice within a definable and accountable set of ethical parameters.
