Research and write in a range of feature styles. You are encouraged to analyse the work of a variety of feature writers while developing your own ideas about news values, style and subject matter used in this genre. You have the opportunity to produce a news feature for a newspaper and a profile piece for a magazine.

The unit builds on prior learning in writing, research and interviewing. By the end of the unit you will be able to identify and analyse the different types of feature articles used in the print media, use advanced interview techniques to build a feature story, write using different feature styles, understand style variation when writing for different markets and pitch a feature story to a chosen publication.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. identify the different types of feature articles used in the print media 
  2. recognise a range of feature writing structures and techniques, including different styles of intros and closers, narrative structures, literary devices & tone 
  3. use advanced research tools and interview techniques to compile information for a feature story 
  4. write in a variety of styles and understand the importance of style variation and deadlines when writing for different markets 
  5. analyse market opportunities and pitch a feature story to a chosen publication.
