Basic principles involved in structuring information objects and creating the metadata which makes them retrievable. Topics include: information structures, hypertext, markup languages, databases, automatic and derived indexing, metadata and description, document type definitions and schemas, indexing languages and standards and subject analysis.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. analyse websites, databases and texts
  2. extract relevant information and formulate for use in context
  3. create applications based on information theory, principle and technology
  4. use international standards to produce information products.

There are no prerequisites for this unit.

Note: Level 2 units normally assume an introductory level of prior knowledge in this area, e.g. from studying related Level 1 units or other relevant experience.
