What's a webinar?

Webinars are just like face-to-face information seminars, except you 'attend' them online (using a desktop, laptop or smart device). They're a really convenient way to access information - and to meet presenters, participants and your student peers - in real time, from any place you choose. You can have your questions answered live while you watch and listen.

Accessing Open Universities Australia (OUA) webinars

If you're new to OUA webinars, or if you've had problems accessing them previously, here's a quick guide to what you need to do before you access a session. We recommend reading and completing this list of instructions at least a day before the scheduled webinar (if possible).

Getting ready for the webinars

What do I need to participate?

  1. You need a computer connected to the internet (we recommend you avoid using a tablet or mobile device until you're more familiar with the system).
  2. You also need a headset (with earphones and microphone) or speakers and a mic; although keep in mind you don't need to speak if you'd prefer not to; you can type or just observe.

Step 1.

Go to Blackboard Collaborate Launcher site to start the download.

Enter test classroom

If it's your first time (or the first time on your device), please install Blackboard Collaborate Launcher well before the session.

Step 2.

Blackboard Collaborate prompts you to download Launch Blackboard Collaborate installer if you have not already installed it or if your browser "thinks" you have not installed the launcher.

  • Actual first time user: If this is the first time you are using the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher, click Download to access the installation file.

  • Apparent first time user: Even if you already installed the launcher, you may be treated as a "first time user" and be prompted to download the launcher. This can happen if you cleared your cache and cookies last time you exited your browser, use secure or private browsing or use a different browser.

If this is the case, you do not need to re-download the installer again. Instead click Launch Blackboard Collaborate to bypass the download and then open your meeting.collab file.

Step 3.

A pop-up window reminds you to install the launcher. Do not click Join until after you have installed the launcher.

Internet Explorer and Firefox users - if you do click Join now, your prompt to open and run the installer file will be hidden behind a prompt to open the meeting.collab file.

Click Join

Step 4.

Once the download is complete, open the Blackboard Collaborate setup wizard. (Different browsers handle this scenario differently and the behaviour of each browser may vary depending on how you configured your browser settings).

If your browser also prompts you to open the meeting.collab file, do not do so until you have installed the launcher.

When you run the installer, you possibly may see an installer information dialog that says "the cabinet file is corrupt and cannot be used." It means the download of the installer was incomplete. This will happen if you lost your connection during download. Download the installer again.

Firefox

It will prompt you to save the Windows installer 'BlackboardCollaborateLauncher-Win.msi'. Save the file. The default save location is your browser's Downloads library. Open the Downloads library and, when the download is complete, open the file to start the Blackboard Collaborate setup wizard.

Firefox

Chrome

It will prompt you to save the Windows installer 'BlackboardCollaborateLauncher-Win.msi'. Save the file. The default save location is your Downloads folder. Chrome shows you the progress of the download in the bottom-left corner of your browser window. When the download is complete, click the file to start the Blackboard Collaborate setup wizard.

Firefox

Internet Explorer

It will prompt you to run or save the Windows installer 'BlackboardCollaborateLauncher-Win.msi'. Click Run to start the Blackboard Collaborate setup wizard.

Firefox

Step 5.

Click Next > to start the setup wizard and Finish once complete.

If you see the Modify, Repair or Remove installation screen, the launcher is already installed. Click Cancel to exit the setup wizard. The setup wizard installs the Windows launcher and adds it to the Start menu.

Windows 8 or later users can find the launcher on the Start page in Metro view.

Firefox

Step 6.

Once Blacboard Collaborate Launcher has been installed, click Join to confirm that you have installed the launcher.

Click Join

Step 7.

To log in to your session input your name and select Login.

Click Join

Step 8.

When the session file has finished downloading, follow the prompts to open the file. If there are no prompts, go to your browser's downloads folder and open the file meeting.collab in Blackboard Collaborate Launcher to join the session.

Click Join

Step 9.

When prompted, press run

Click Join

Step 10.
