OUA partners with Defence to provide education opportunities

OUA-DCO-Partnership
Stuart Hamilton and Brigadier General Peter Gates

Open Universities Australia has formed a partnership with Defence to provide tertiary and higher education opportunities to Australian Defence Force (ADF) Personnel, Defence Australian Public Service employees, their partners and their family members.

Alan Griffin, Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Defence Personnel, joined Stuart Hamilton, Open Universities Australia CEO, to officially launch the new partnership in Canberra.

The partnership will provide tertiary and higher education opportunities to Australian Defence Force Personnel, Defence Australian Public Service employees, their partners and their family members.

Mr Griffin said, "Distance learning through Open Universities Australia will permit partners of Australian Defence Force members to continue their education regardless of where in the world they are posted to."

Stuart Hamilton said, "We are strongly committed to removing traditional barriers to higher education and our partnership with Defence reflects this. Participants will receive additional benefits under the OUA partnership, including priority enrolment, academic support with an online tutor and advice from our Enrolment Advisors to help them in their career aspirations with a study plan that best suits them."

Defence Force members can receive credit or advanced standing for relevant qualifications gained while in the Defence Force or through other prior formal study. This can shorten the time it takes to complete a degree.

A number of funding options may also be available to ADF members to cover or assist with the costs of study. Recognised ADF partners can receive an education and employment allowance of up to $12,000 over a ten year period under the Defence Community Organisation's new Partner Education and Employment Program (PEEP).

Open Universities Australia has also agreed to provide an additional level of support to Australian Defence Force member children, as well as Defence Australian Public Service employees and their family members. This support includes a priority corporate support team, financial support for the purchase of text books and tutorial support.

"Enhancing study and employment prospects is an important part of supporting Australian Defence Force members and their families," Mr Griffin said.
