Occupational health and safety students from the Australian Catholic University are awarded accreditation

OUA is delighted to announce that from 2017, occupational health and safety (OHS) students who graduate from select degrees from the Australian Catholic University (ACU) will now meet the educational requirement to apply for certification as an OHS Professional with the Safety Institute of Australia.

ACU’s Master of Occupational Health Safety and Environmental Management and Graduate Diploma of Occupational Health Safety and Environmental Management have both been awarded official accreditation by The Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board for a maximum of five years, from 2017 through to 2021.

The core activity of the Accreditation Board, in association with The Safety Institute of Australia, is to review university level OHS professional education programs and, in turn, provide recognition for the programs that meet the accreditation criteria. The Board’s vision is that OHS professional education meets the highest possible industry standards and so is recognised by the profession, government, industry and the community.

OUA’s Executive General Manager for University Relationships, Janine Harper, says that this is a big win for OHS students.

‘The team at ACU put a huge amount of work into the accreditation submission process and it’s wonderful to see that the students who have worked so hard to complete these specific programs will be awarded the well-deserved benefits that accreditation brings,’ says Ms Harper.

‘What is also fantastic is that due to the timing of the accreditation, students completing their program in 2017 will be eligible to seek certification,’ she concludes.

Accreditation from The Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board means that:

  1. Students who graduate from the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Health Safety and Environmental Management will be deemed to have met the OHS qualification content requirement for certification, at either OHS professional or Chartered OHS professional levels.
  2. Students who graduate from the Master of Occupational Health Safety and Environmental Management will be deemed to have met the OHS qualification content requirement for certification, at either OHS professional or Chartered OHS professional levels.
