Student services and amenities fee
As of 1 January 2012 higher education providers will be able to charge an annual compulsory student services and amenities fee (capped at $263 per student in 2012 but indexed on an annual basis). Students who are eligible for HECS-HELP are eligible for a loan through SA-HELP to help pay the student services and amenities fee (SSAF). For more details, visit the Study Assist web site.
In light of the above, we strongly advise students to contact their university provider for details of their policy in relation to SA-HELP.
Payment options
In addition to the above savings, Commonwealth supported place students may be eligible to receive more flexible HECS-HELP payment options.
These include:
- Deferring payments on all course fees until an income threshold is reached.
- Making a partial upfront payment of $500 or more per Study Period and receiving a 10% discount on the portion paid. The remaining total can then be deferred until an income threshold is reached.
- Making a full upfront payment per Study Period and receiving a 10% discount. Unlike FEE-HELP, invoices for your Commonwealth supported study fees will be issued by your provider.
Payments must be made BEFORE the Census Date if you choose to take advantage of the discounted options. Payments on both FEE-HELP and HECS-HELP loans are paid through the Australian Taxation Office once your income reaches the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment. For more details on the threshold, please visit the Loan repayments page of the Study Assist website.
To be eligible for HECS-HELP you must be:
- An Australian citizen
- A permanent humanitarian visa holder residing in Australia for the duration of your study.
If you are New Zealand citizen, the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa residing outside Australia or the holder of a permanent visa that is not a permanent humanitarian visa , you are eligible for a Commonwealth supported place, but you must make an upfront payment of all your student contribution fees to your provider before the Census Date.
More information about the options and benefits available can be found in the Information for Commonwealth supported students information booklet (PDF, 0.99 MB).
