This course aims to produce qualified graduates who are professionally recognised forensic mental health specialists at an advanced level. The Forensic Mental health course is intended for mental health professionals working in (or intending to work in) the forensic mental health field. In addition to health departments specifically catering to forensic patients, the course may be relevant to professionals in related areas such as corrections, families departments and disability services.
Course Objectives
On completion of the course students will have:

A working understanding of policies and legislation relevant to the administration of forensic mental health

Knowledge of the history of thinking, policy and practice with respect to forensic mental health, and be able to critically apply that knowledge to contemporary problems in forensic mental health services

Knowledge of professional ethics and systems of accountability, particularly as these relate to the delivery of forensic mental health services

Achieved competencies in applied risk assessment and risk management of forensic mental health patients

Achieved competencies in the clinical assessment, treatment and management of forensic mental health patients
Eligibility
Applicants for the Master of Forensic Mental Health require an undergraduate degree with a GPA of 4.5 or higher in Psychology, Nursing, Criminology, Social Work or other mental health-related discipline.
Applicants without an undergraduate degree or with a GPA of 4.5 or lower can apply for entry into the Graduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health and must achieve Pass grades in all four Graduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health units with a GPA of 4.5 or higher, before applying for entry into the Masters course.

This course is restricted. Students are required to apply and be approved by Griffith University before they can enrol in units through OUA.
Applications for the Graduate Certificate and Masters of Forensic Mental Health are due two weeks prior to the close of enrolment.

- English language test results - if your courses were not predominantly in
English e.g. IELTS
or equivalent test results.
- Official translations of any documents not in English.
A "certified" copy is a copy bearing the recognised mark of a Justice of the Peace,
Commission of Oaths or declarations, Public Notary or a Solicitor.

Award Requirements
To qualify for the award of Graduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health students must complete four units.
Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit
Griffith University may award credit for prior learning. Students can apply to gain credit for prior learning at the postgraduate level by lodging a credit transfer application form. For further information and a copy of the form, please contact Griffith University.
Registering in this Course
OUA students should notify Griffith University of their intention to graduate with the award of Graduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health in the final year of their studies.
