Description
This unit will explore innovative approaches to current environmental, social and economic challenges and provide a broad understanding of the alignment of Information Technology with business goals and strategies. The design and implementation of Information Technology strategy is central to this unit. Students will review the application of specific information and communications technologies to business in the wider context of changes to organisational structures, systems, cultures and stakeholder relationships. Students will also study the challenges faced by businesses in achieving a return on investment in Information Technology initiatives and the need to evaluate and manage the associated risk.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this unit students will be able to
- critically appraise the value and contribution of Information Technology in a range of organisational contexts
- relate the concept of strategic alignment to a range of organisational environments
- design an Information Technology strategy that aligns with broader strategic intent
- evaluate the contribution of current Information Technology applications to the areas of process improvement, competitive advantage and collaboration
- apply a holistic perspective (including social capital) to resolving stakeholder concerns regarding Information Technology strategy
- analyse the implications of Information Technology strategy design for implementation initiatives in the areas of business process management, change management, and knowledge management
- critique the application of a holistic risk perspective to Information Technology strategies and approaches in the context of integrated economic, environmental and social accountability
- assess the financial implications of Information Technology strategy decisions particularly in terms of: risk and return-on-investment (ROI); costs and benefits; and accounting concerns, such as the need to depreciate assets
- apply a theoretical base to evaluating ethical issues in Information Technology strategy.
